PVC Rod Sizes:
PVC Rod is typically available in diameters ranging from as small as 6mm diameter up to as large as 300mm diameter and there are many sizes in between that are usually spaced at approx 5mm to 10mm increments. This helps with being able to find a PVC Rod that is close in diameter to what is required with a minimum machining waste. It is also useful to remember that PVC is semi finished and manufactured slightly oversize to allow finish machining to the accurate size enabling the removal of any minor surface imperfections by the machining process. The lengths of PVC Rod are commonly available at 2000mm long for the majority of the size range, although the larger rod sizes are available in 1000mm lengths only due to the weight of the rod.
PVC Rod Colours:
PVC Rod is generally manufactured in a mid grey colour and most PVC Rod is sold in this colour but it is also sold in red and black, these other two colours are also very popular but are available in a slightly reduced size range, there is also a cream/ivory colour produced but this is generally available to order.
PVC Rod Applications:
One of the common applications for PVC Rod is within the automotive industry due to its low weight, toughness and good fire rating. Further applications are within the water industry due to its low prices, moisture resistance and chemical resistance. PVC Rod can also be found within numerous machines and components that require high electrical insulation.
Further applications for PVC Rod can include handles or other components associated with the manufacture of water or chemical tanks, this is because PVC Rod is compatible with the material commonly used in the manufacture of valves or fittings within that industry.
PVC Rod is also a very good all round general purpose plastic and is often seen in everyday life as either a spacer, as a washer or even a light duty gear wheel and will provide a very good lifespan in light duty domestic appliances.
PVC Rod Manufacturing:
The polymer is heated to allow "flow" and stored in large tanks, this heated polymer is then forced at great pressure through dies by using an Archimedes screw. The result is an accurate PVC Rod that is very dense and easily machined.
PVC Rod Advantages:
PVC Rod is very economical and can save money if a general purpose type engineering plastic will be acceptable. PVC Rod is very easily bonded or welded with relative ease and with adhesives that are readily available. PVC Rod is also class 1 fire rated which means that although NOT flame retardant it will self extinguish once any flame is removed. PVC Rod is also pretty easy to machine and if sharp and correctly ground tools are used a good surface finish can be achieved. A further advantage of PVC Rod is ease of fabrication, this allows the product to be heated at moderate temperatures and formed into a desired shape, cooled and the shape will be retained, this process can be repeated as necessary. PVC Rod is also an excellent electrical insulator and the fact that most electrical insulation is manufactured from PVC based materials is a testament to its abilities. A further advantage of PVC Rod is its chemical resistance, a substantial quantity of tank linings and ducting is manufactured from PVC and because it can easily be welded and bonded makes for an economical solution.
